I spent 6 months in Brazil in 2006 working in a travelling evangelical
circus, in 2007 was I recording an album for a community in the
North, but in the South doing Clown shows and in 2008 I'm returning
to some of those places to do the same again! Issue 3 of BMS magazine
'Engage' (Summer 2008) has an article entitled 'Creative
Mission' which looks at some of the things that I've been
involved in. Check out the article in your Church copy of the
magazine or on the BMS website here.
I'm aiming to arrive in Saõ Paulo and to spend
a short time with a community in 'Penha' where there is a Children's
School in the heart of the favela and to do some clowning, help
with computers and to offer English lessons. After this I will
be heading North to BMS missionaries - Daveen and Mike Wilson
in Trapiá, RGN where I'll be recording local musicians
on my laptop recording studio and teaching guitar etc. With the
help of the several people at the Baptist College in Cardiff we've
bought an Acoustic Bass Guitar to donate to the community in Trapiá
as they are keen to study music but have little resources. In
fact, personally, I have not even seen a Bass Guitar within a
30 or 40 miles radius ofTrapiá so it will be a great opportuinity
to explore their musicality to new depths!
.
The results of the 2007 Trapiá trip can be seen in the
Wilson's update / prayer letter on the BMS website found
here
(Pdf format, you will need Adobe Acrobat to view it) and there
is also a write up of the trip on the BMS website here.
Brazil is a huge country and Trapiá is in the north near
to the equator and is generally very dry and barren.
This is an excerpt from the BMS website -
Trapiá is located in one of the poorest regions of
Brazil where around 17 million people are living below the poverty
line. Trapiá itself is home to approximately 2,000 people
who are continually faced with social, economic and environmental
difficulties. They are poorly educated and heavily in debt. The
area is just below the equator and so, as well as being arid,
it is also very hot and plagued by drought.
BMS workers Mike and Daveen Wilson have been pioneering the work
in the region and details can be found at the below link:
